JOB SUMMARY:

The Workplace Technologies Manager oversees the PC environment at Southern Company to ensure a seamless and modern workplace experience. This role involves selecting hardware, making annual procurement decisions, and managing 40,000 devices which directly impact productivity across the enterprise. Responsibilities include researching industry trends, creating an environment roadmap, vendor management, budget oversight, continual process improvement, operating system/browser/baseline management, software delivery, vulnerability resolution and managing a team of engineers and third-level support personnel to deliver efficient solutions.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills)

B.S. degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Business, or a related field is required.

Extensive knowledge of end-user technologies and supporting infrastructure, including Desktop and Mobile Computing, Active Directory, Azure, InTune, MECM, NexThink, and Delinea. Must be knowledgeable about current industry best practices, products, techniques, and trends.

Strong focus on quality and the business partners’ technology experience, with a willingness to challenge the status quo.

Strong business acumen is mandatory. The incumbent must ensure technology solutions provide excellent business value and adjust solution sets as needed to maximize technology investments and expenses.

Working knowledge of the Technology Organization’s role in daily operations across Southern Company.

Strong vendor and supplier management skills. The incumbent needs to negotiate with vendor partners, hold them accountable for service quality, define roadmaps, escalate issues, and solve complex problems.

Knowledge of budgeting, fiscal management, and cost estimation for technology projects and maintenance. Must understand budgetary principles and oversee capital and operating budgets.

Excellent analytical, problem-solving, planning, and project management skills.

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Ability to prioritize and manage multiple priorities for multiple people.

MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Workplace Technologies Manager leads the team responsible for engineering, integrating and developing end-user solutions related to PC, MECM, browser platforms and application delivery standards across Southern Company. This role oversees the delivery of end-user technology to business partners throughout the enterprise. The manager determines hardware model selection and supervises $15MM in annual equipment purchases. Computing platforms under this role's supervision include Windows Desktop Operating System, InTune, MECM, Delinea, NexThink, Active Directory/Azure among others. The team is accountable for hardware selection for all end-user PCs and laptops, establishing operating system baselines and configurations, ensuring patches and security updates are applied and maintaining operating system currency across the enterprise.

The Workplace Technologies Manager is tasked with continuously modernizing and enhancing the PC refresh and new PC delivery processes. This role involves staying abreast of industry trends, evaluating new automation opportunities, and crafting a vision for an improved future state. Implementing these cross-team and cross-company changes requires significant influence and dedication, as the outcomes affect every user within our enterprise.

For certain technologies, such as browser platforms, the emphasis is more on integration rather than engineering solutions. Software publishers frequently update their products to introduce new features and capture greater market share. This constant evolution places a substantial demand on the Workplace Technologies team to stay technically current while ensuring seamless integration with our business applications.

Beyond technical execution, these initiatives must be strategically aligned with business objectives. The Workplace Technologies Manager is tasked with continually assessing market shifts, analyzing environmental factors, evaluating costs, and making informed recommendations to ensure optimal technology investments.

The ideal candidate should stay informed about evolving business needs and emerging trends, techniques, and solutions in the end-user technology domain. The Workplace Technologies Manager must be strategic, capable of developing long-term visions, strategies, roadmaps, and plans. When unexpected business needs arise, the team must respond swiftly and efficiently. This requires the Manager to continuously evaluate demand and reprioritize work based on dynamic business conditions, incorporating new market products and capabilities as they become available.

Managing vendor and supplier partnerships is a crucial aspect of the Workplace Technologies Manager role. The position entails ensuring that our suppliers remain accountable for delivering high-quality solutions within the agreed-upon timeframes.

The Workplace Technologies Manager ensures that Business Partner Communications are conducted at all relevant levels in a timely manner. They oversee the process to ensure communications are tailored for the audience, clearly written and delivered effectively. Additionally, this role manages process exceptions to minimize negative impacts on critical systems.

The Workplace Technology Manager is responsible for attracting, developing, retaining and managing a diverse group of technical individual contributors. In this role, the incumbent oversees hiring, performance management and terminations, providing daily work direction, feedback and coaching to their direct reports. They are also accountable for workforce planning for their organization, identifying and developing successors for their positions as well as for their direct reports.

Expense management and budgetary oversight is crucial to the role. The position manages a budget of approximately $1MM annually; however, decisions made have a direct impact on the Enterprise PC Budget and Print Budgets totaling $22MM annually.
