Technical Product Owner (Atlanta or Birmingham)
As part of the Customer Engagement Portfolio within Southern Company’s Technology organization, the Product Owner is responsible for managing and supporting system product enhancements, maintenance, and requests for the Online Customer Care (OCC) suite of solutions including multiple web, batch, and middleware applications. This role will involve every aspect of the product development process from discovery, delivery, and support while following agile methodologies and focusing on upholding a high standard of quality.
This role will report to the Online Customer Solutions Supervisor in the Technology Organization’s Customer Engagement Portfolio.
- B.S. degree in preferably in business, IT, engineering, computer science, or another technology-focused field.
Knowledge and experience with transactional web sites and the integrated middleware applications
Working knowledge of utility operating company business unit rules and processes
Strong analytical, root cause analysis, and problem-solving skills with ability to elicit and efficiently document business rules and research technical issues
Excellent interpersonal skills and strong, proactive communications skills including the ability to communicate complex concepts clearly across different audiences and varying levels
Experience working in a highly collaborative environment with cross-disciplinary teams (Quality Analysts, Developers, Architects, and Analysts) and business groups (technical and non-technical) to shepherd products through the complete SDLC while building consensus and collaboration between teams
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment acting quickly when required. Ability to identify and quickly implement process improvements and make sound decisions; Flexible, can work under stress with changing direction and responsibilities and with minimal supervision
Good planning and organization skills; Ability to prioritize backlogs comprising of new features, bugs, technical work, and knowledge acquisition
Skilled at leading software projects of varying sizes and degrees of complexity
Highly motivated and solution-oriented
Firm understanding of and aptitude for technical and digital tools preferred
Knowledge of current and relevant digital, mobile, and web best practices in design and implementation preferred
Experience with development projects leveraging agile scrum development methodologies preferred
Technical aptitude to understand web, batch, database, and middleware applications and architecture preferred
General Roles and Responsibilities
Develop, adapt and carry out product implementation plan from beginning to end, supporting and championing the vision desired for the completed product.
Lead and own a functional area and team to allow more specialized focus across Online Solutions teams which includes setting, prioritizing, and evaluating the work generated by the scrum agile scrum delivery team.
Act as a subject matter expert responsible for several roles, including business analyst, product designer, market analyst, customer liaison, project manager, production support, and quality assurance.
Obtains deep product and business knowledge and communication skills allow them to anticipate problems or needs and address them.
Define growth opportunities for the specialized functional area
Ensure and assist in achieving and meeting deadlines and schedules.
Defining and instrumenting success criteria that is measured via qualitative and quantitative feedback
Create, plan, and prioritize an effectively groomed backlog based on the overall strategy and business objectives and ensure that the scrum Agile team always has an adequate amount of prior prepared tasks to consume.
Clearly define Acceptance Criteria for each backlog item or feature.
Work directly with agile product and development teams during design and development ensuring the product is meeting specifications, efficiency and quality are maintained, the user experience and interface is considered and implemented, and the integrity of the vision of the end product is maintained.
Work with the agile development team to ensure appropriate tests are completed during the development process and that issues are quickly remediated to minimize defects during the user acceptance testing by the operating companies.
Accountable for each stage of the development process and the final product while taking a primary role in inspecting and evaluating product progress through each iteration.
Provide quality control, facilitating demos and reviewing stories. Responsible for accepting stories as done.
Be a primary resource and business/customer proxy and work closely with business units to ensure both common and specific business rules are identified and integrated into product design and development.
Manage business expectations, bring issues to business’ attention proactively; offer solutions.
Maintain frequent communications with business units.
Responsible for effective communication with stakeholders across the board, including customers, business managers, and the development team to make sure the goals are clear, and the vision is aligned with business objectives.
Provide a strong commitment to support business committees and their strategies.
Occasional night and weekend work may be necessary.
Occasional travel may be necessary.
